CRIME SI POA & STRATHMORE LAW CLINIC CONDUCT A TOWN HALL SESSION IN KIBERA WITH THE RESIDENTS AND IPOA AND POLICE ON FOSTERING COHESION.

On the 26th of May 2018 at the Shofco Community Hall, in Kibera, the Strathmore Law Clinic and the Youth Safety Awareness Initiative (an NGO more commonly known as ‘Crime Si Poa’), conducted a street law session aimed at empowering the residents of Kibera with an in-depth understanding of the rights of arrested persons and the measures to take when such rights are either threatened or violated.

The session brought together the residents of Kibera, and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), the National Police Service and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP); all of which are institutions that have a vital role to play in the protection and the promotion of the rights of arrested persons.

Given the amount of effort that each one of the represented institutions put into this session by explaining their role in criminal justice, why and how the residents should reach out to them, and by answering their residents; it is the Strathmore Law Clinicians’ strong belief that, as the residents of Kibera left Shofco Community Hall that day, they were empowered with the legal capacity to ensure that their rights, especially the rights of arrested persons, are protected.
